New Nice Basic Poem Type Problem - Permutation & Combination :)

Ari, the king of Egypina, is very vain
Wishes all his soldiers be called by his own name!

Dexter, his minister, finds this ludicrous,
And to the relief of the soldiers,
Manages a fine bargain.

“Your highness, all soldiers will have an ‘A’ in their names”, says he,
“The initial letter of your name that ‘A’ happens to be.”

“Amen, but no name will have more letters than mine has” the king bellows!
“Else, find yourself, Dexter, right at the gallows!”

If all soldiers in Ari’s army have unique names, how many soldiers can the army have at the most?

262=676 ===3 llettered names

26 two lettered names

and 1 one lettered name!!

hence option 4.....

ie,total 703 names r possible

but if none can have name ARI then answer is none of these ...because then it is 702

now coming to 2 letter names ...... we have ......

(26)^2 - (25)^2[the second term is the no of names without A]

and 3 letter names ..

(26)^3 - 25^3 [the second term is the no of names without A].......

iitimcomin why cant u just fix A as the first leteer..!!!n then we can have the second letter in 26 ways for 2 lettered names n second n third lettrs in 26 ways each for 3 lettered names!!!?????

why make it complicated???

i think d answer is 3675.......
we can divide it into 2 cases-

1) an A and 2 letters same
25*3=75

2) an A and rest 2 different
25C1 * 24C1 * 3!=3600

so,d answer is 75+3600=3675...
n am pretty sure on dis one....
