but why not 119????
we get that from symmetry.....
A rail road numbers its locomotives in order 1,2,..,n. One day u see a locomotive adn its no. is 60. Guess how many locomotives the company has?

Or may be from MTG magazine :), coz i've picked it frm there and they hav given it to be frm Chinese Olympiad..
oh I din notice..
vivek has already mentioned Max Likelihood!!
How did you read that one! Great you have!
Not that you guys dont have brains ;P
but then when I first read this one I was surprised by the result.
The answer should have been 119 or something!
wow you both have brains rohan and celestine.
This one comes from Maximum Likelihood estimator!
I am surprised that you have the brain to reason it out! :O
feel ans shud be 60
now prob of seeing a 60 frm set of n is 1/n with n≥60
this prob is maximum when n= 60
It is 60,from the maximum likelihood principle, but that principle itself is not very reliable
mtg ni ho sakte ..........i hav done few of them .that to long back.i hav seen this sol also yaar.aab yaad ni aara sirf answer yaad hai :P
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm i hav doen this q i guess tmh se hai solved eg
i guesss ansewrr is 110 if ma memory wrks well
i dnt remebr d method xactly n alos d chap
bt u can say that d locomotive wich u c is d middle one so nw u hav total on avg 120 locomotives bt it includes d one wich u hav seen so -1 .
sumthng of dat sort ............
i guess itz frm tmh ...bt it can also b frm das gupta...ml khanna.........or ma clases notes :P
dats correct frm symmetry....
But one can also argue thsi way dat there r only 60 locomotives coz if there r 119, the probability of observing 60 is 1/119 and if der r 60, the probability is 1/60,so it's more probable..adn obviously der can't be 59!!!
d que doesnt has ne prfct ans acc 2 me
wen u look at no.60
u could well assume as the middle 1
den
59+1+59=119
ya itz frm tmh ...........119...is it d answer had done taht in nov or dec i guess.i'll recollct d method n tell u
No it's not 110...
And is is really frm TMH?[11]...coz it's a Chinese Olympiad ques...
