adding two equations (x+y)^2 +(x+y) - 30 = 0
let (x+y) = a
a^2 + a - 30 = 0, a= 5 or -6
when (x+y) = 5 , y = 5-x substituting in the first equation
x^2 + (5-x)(x+1) = 17
you can find x by solving the quadratic ,and then find y.
consider another case when x+y = -6
