We know friction occurs due to irregularities at molecular level,what is the origin of normal reaction between the surfaces?

normal reaction is the force given by the surface on the thing concerned.. like if a block is placed on a surface, it wills to go down penetrating the surface due to "g" !! thus a force is applied by the body on the surface. to counter this force the surface also gives an equal and opposite force upward on the block.. if the surface is not able to give a force of equal magnitude then the surface would break allowing the block to go down..

when a body is kept on a surface.. the intermolecular force of attraction between the molecules of the surface does not allow the penetration of the surface due to g... the inter nuclear repulsive forces between the nucleus of the atoms of the surface and the body is the origin of normal reaction between the surfaces.. =)

  • Sourav Deb yeah, the nuclei repel each other, pushing us away, but the nuclei also attract the electrons, pulling us towards it. the result is - we stay where we are.

The e- on the surface of each body is the case of normal reaction. They repel each other.
