Yup you are right in that way.... Mechanical has slightly wider scope..
but chemical is a very good branch too...
No you should not prefer chem D over mech K
Go for mech K..
That will be better.. (even thought the difference in dept is not there at all..)
Scoring grades is easier in chem..
but you get more time to do different things in mech...

no yar...i ve bin to bits copmuter science....it is really good but....
u dont as much opportunities from bits as from iit
i wont get delhi mechanical at this rank ...it closed arnd 650 last yr and it neva goes past 700....
so im left wid only chemical or electrical power at delhi .....!
i just donno wt is wrong and wt ryt at this stage ....!

Dont take power at IITD..
Take some other branch (electrical) at any other old IIT....
Dont think twice about this.

it is related to transmission of power. it is equivalent to electrical engineering.
its really a good branch

u have got a pretty good rank.
u must think about taking mech, circuit branches, in some other iits like madras , kanpur, bombay.
u think about it. ask urself if u really like mechanical or circuit branches.

but i have this fascination of iitd...
olwz dreamt of it ...
its my dream iit i wud say....
i used study at narayana kalu sarai...just opposite to iitd ....v just had to cross a road...
so v used to go thr quite regularly....
wud it be very stupid of me to take iit d just coz it makes me feel bttr.....?
i mean choosing chem over mech ....will it be a compromise...?

Kaam kar yaar...apni seat mujhe dede!! lol...which subject are you most inclined to? Forget Delhi and Kanpur. You must study that subject which you enjoy, out of mechanical and chemical. Trust me. It's whatever's best for your career, not home support.
But really...if I had gotten comp science in BITS Pilani, I wouldn't leave. Maybe I should partially drop with BITS if I get it...:P

i can get mech at kanpur only....i dont wana go to chennai or kgp
wont get it at bombay or delhi ....
but as you u say ...iitians dont really get core jobs nd dept doesnt make tht much of diffrnc ...thn shud i prefer iit d chemical over iit k mechanical ....evn tho mech is smwht a bttr branch as compared to chemical
yeah i wana go for mba or ms....donno as of now!
wat wud u suggest now ?

Deepanshul.
A slight word of caution...
See you must have realized already that core jobs in India are FAKE.. they dont exist. The ones that do, any IITian will hardly want to take them in the current form.
So If you are really really interested in Mechanical then be prepared to go for an MS abroad. The onlyh problem with the courses in India is that they are way too theoretical and dont give you the hands on needed.
If you are ready for an MS.. then your department will not matter. Go to a good IIT over the dept. I think Mech at the best IIT possible.
I would recommend
Bombay -> KGP/ Delhi -> Chennai -> Kanpur
In that order...

I suggest you go for the college rather than stream (unless, of course, you are a die-hard lover of some particular branch)
Now you decide if IIT-D is better than IIT-K?
I'll go for IIT-D

true that the contents of chemical engg overlap quite a bit with those of mechanical engg. but, u have to ultimately look at both as 2 different branches. I feel, if u are really inclined towards mechanical engg., you should go for iitk mech. becoz eventually, down the line, the branch ur into will matter a lot. so think well, before u make the choice.
cheers!!

i struggled a lot yar...bohot dimaag khatab hua...
but i relied on my previous yrs prep...cudnt prepr much this tym ...
bits system is continuous evaluation...whch means a test olmost evrydy...tht 2 surprised ....
tht really really hurts a lot....

yeah ..but i ve heard tht courses in mech and chem r smwht similar....
nd partially droppng with bits is nt tht nyc n option as it appears .....!
