hmm in (a) the ammeter gives the total current due to the voltage shown by the voltmeter...

in (b) the ammeter gives the current in only one branch of a circuit....

maybe thats why

In option a if u see the ammeter is connected before the voltmeter .
As the ammeter consists of a galvanometer connected in series to a large resistance the voltage shown by voltmeter is the actual voltage minus the potential drop .. SO I Think OPTION A is correct...

Correct me if i am wrong ..[34]
