the 1st 2 charges repel.so the 3rd should also repel the 1st to an equal extent?
thus Q=3q,isnt it?

@madhu if u take Q=-3q then:

3q will repel q and Q will attract q ...hence an equlibrium can never be attained infact there wouldnt be equilibrium for any negative value of Q considering q lies between 3q and Q

infact there will be one more answer:

there are 3 arrangements possible

1> 3q......Q.......q //there will be no equilibrium in this case considering equal separation

2>3q.......q......Q // the answer for this will be Q=+3q(as akara has mentioned)

3>q......3q......Q // there will be equilibrium in this case as well with Q=+q
