Ok what do we mean when we say the "reactance of the circuit" without mentioning whether it is inductive or capacitive.....

take the voltage source be
V=Vosinωt
now we split the circuit into 2 separate circuits one purely capacitive and another purely inductive,
thus, Ic=Iocsin (ωt+θ)
and IL=IoLsin (ωt-θ)
where
|θ|=π/2
thus we can see that the phase difference between the two wave forms of current is π...
and so at every point of time, IL=-Ic
this gives instantaneous current as |IL|-|Ic|
thus peak value of current is |IoL-Ioc|
RMS current is |IL - Ic√2| = |IL√2 - Ic√2| = Ic rms - IL rms
