here a charge 2q is given to the shell c and shell a has got q charge inside it....and it is earthed...calculate the charges on the surface of each shell...also pl hilite the concept bhind it

see we need potential..

Assume that charge x flowed to the inner shell.

So what happens is that some charge will come to it..

Potential of earth is taken as zero.

So we need to find the potential at the innermost shell to be 0

for that.. the outer shells will not contribute any potential.

The inner charge q will give a potential kq/ra

and the shell will contribute kx/ra

net potential at the inner shell will be 0

so kq/ra + kx/ra = 0

so x= -q

also realise that no charge can flow from and to shells c and a..

so there will be no transfers of charge and their charge will remain the same..

There are 2 situations that u will generally need to deal with..

1 when there is a shell (single layered!)

2 when there is a metallic (a bit thick) shell)

If u dont get confused in the two things.. this concept is farirly simple to understand..

ask any clarifications or doubts if u have

pl tell me if itz the case ith hollow sphere also?if electrostatic induction takes place nd givs charge on the surface of shells

if it is a hollow sphere.. then the charges will redistribute...

how and y?

May be u wud try to use thick shells and try this same problem urself?

what will be the solution if the thin shell is replaced by thick mettalic shell?
