i thought that since they cant break open the last compartment
they could break open the shackles b/w 20 and 21 st...(nearest to the last compartment..)
but not getting how it took the shortest possible time in doing so..

The following question is a conceptual one . So hope you like solving it :
An article is published in the Times Of India . It reads -
THEY STRIKE AGAIN : ---
New Delhi , 17 - th Semptember , 2012 :
Yesterday , a group of notorious robbers better known as “ The Group Of Geniuses “ robbed a train daringly in broad daylight , which comes just after two days of their 100 - th robbbery . This particular robbery is being dubiously dubbed as one of the most daring robberies in the world so far . The robbers , Nishant Sir , kaymant Sir and Prophet Sir , reportedly broke “ The Success Express “ in parts by disconnecting a compartment , and went away with an amount nearing almost 1 crore pink posts !! The whole city is still in awe how they did it , because they only got 2 minutes to disconnect the train after it gathered the highest possible speed , and 2 minutes is just not the enough time to disconnect a whole compartment . Interestingly , the group , through a internet site , has just released the information that they are going to surrender if it is found out which compartment they broke open . In all , the train had 22 compartments , and according to the hint given by the robbers , they took the shortest time possible to break open a compartment , and the train was alredy speeding at a considerable velocity.
But , as nobody actually remembers the exact compartment , so it is seemingly impossible to speculate the correct answer . So , the police department have hired a famous detective site , TARGET - IIT , in order to solve the mystery . The reward , as believed , is a PINK POST !! Now , it seems that the fate of the city depends upon the users of TARGET - IIT . Let’s hope that they succeed .
{ Please don’t think that I am considering pink posts as something valuable or as a measure of one’s brilliance . }

well take two loops an attach a tight fitting plug n then try pullin it out....
One thing eludes my understanding....how can lesser tension make it easier to break?
Take a rubber-band, try to cut it...once normally and the next time while pulling. Which one will be easier to cut?
the 20th n 21st one...cos tat will have the min tension ..............so it'll be easy to pull the plug out
i think itz somewat related to puffer technique used in train in which a puffer switch is present in between 1st and 2nd compartment and conveys highly compressed gas to keep the compartment intact........may be breaking the suply of gas wud do.
BUT M NOT AT ALL SURE ABOUT WHAT I SAID[7]
I THINK FROM'S PHYSICS POINT OF VIEW, THEY WENT WITH THE MIDDLE COMPARTMENT SINCE IT WOULD BE FACING THE MAX. AMOUNT OF TENSION FROM EITHER SIDE AND HENCE WOULD REQUIRE THE MIN. EFFORT TO GET DISCONNECTED........
TELL ME IF I M RIGHT.....
It should be the last one - else they'll have to break 2 links to segregate a single compartment.
one thing , if you are solving this , plz state the answer in this fashion --
" They broke the shackles between n - th and m - th compartment from right / left side . "
Well , sorry , but I am afraid that by confirming the answer , I 'll kill the motivation to think about all possible answers . But can you atleast post , that on what basis did you formulate the guess ?
did u edit the quest??
looks a bit different now!!
anyway!!
never mind!!
A good hint would be - Treat the question as a " Physics qs . " rather than a logical one .
Arrey no no , they didn't break the engine or the compartment next to it .
@Soumik , I forgot to mention that they can't break the last one or the first one .
