btw yes u both are right , and it would require infinite tension to straighten it !!!
U hav tied a weight W by a string as shown in d fig .
Now u and ur frnd start pulling the string from both ends and try to straighten the string .
What will be the tension in the string for wich the string completely becomes straight ??

if they pull the stings horizontally then the string will never become completely straight as there will always be the weight acting downward with no force upward to balance it
but if they pull the strings at an angle the upward component balances the weight making the string straight
