I want to ask that.. in case of H2O is it sp3d2 then 3d(red underlined) is empty...?
and in case of CN d2sp3 then( blue overlined) is empty? also in case of CN the 2 electrons in 3d doesnot get paired???
Q. On the basis of VBT describe the structure of [V(H2O)6]3+ and [V(CN)6]3-

Chk this : I guess u'll get ur reply...........
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11399179
this one's an excpetion to da general rules........
For H2O sp3d2
and CN d2sp3
but i am not confirmed about the reasons.
so both d2sp3...
But in fitj package me H20 wala sp3d2 diya hai... (widout any reason)[7]
and in every book they never give this type of examples, only give one in which d4 or d5 se jada wala..
I also din't find anywhere
But this is what I think
for octahedral complex this is the energy level diagram
If the above two are empty (with pairing or without paring in t2g) then hybridization is d2sp3
