Decane has higher melting point coz it has even number of carbons so packing will be gud..
The critical temperature of water is higher than that of O2 because the H2O molecule has :
A. fewer electron than O2
B. two covalent bonds
C. V-shape
D. dipole moment
Fiitjee has given two answers to this q so im not sure of the ans.

no...personally i feel..(without the data)...that u are wrong!!
don u thnk nonane has higher m.p.??
now watever i ws trying to tell if it is for b.p. the reason is M.W. higher or VD forces
and for m.p. it is molecular packing!!
similarly for the former quest the reason ultimetely is d)
for ur melting points.trend is not regular....but it increases[1].so second one!!!!
@Sb..
in case of boling point the chain with 10 carbon atoms will have higher boiling point due to Van-der Waal forces
in case of melting point the chain with 10(even) carbon atoms will have higher melting point due to good packing..
but i wonder..is this question has to do anything with Ronald's question....
yaar u r right about m.p.!!!!but cn u temme wat packing it has lol!!!!![1][1]
n btw from ur figure it seems same atoms r linked so i go with surface area here......[btw question is incomplete dude[1]]
hmm....now i thot tht m p depends on packing nature of objects!!
yaar sb look without wat ur molecules represent it is useless to predict!!!!!!!
CRITICAL TEMP. OF WATER IS HIGHER THAN OXYGEN DUE TO ITS NET DIPOLE MOMENT
SO ANS. (D)
hey [1][1]these days u all r thinking toooooooooooooooo much[1]///////////i agree with #12 for #10[look for surface area].it may help to find out[1]
OR
which has higher melting and boling point???
give reasons..
i feel if we get answers to this the previous Quest may become easier to solve!!
i did feel so V-shape of H2O leads to its net dipole moment....so C , D shuld have been the ans.
i dont noe but i agree wid manjuri di but only due to v shape the dipole moment of H2O is non zero na .........................
The answer has to be d...owing to dipole moment,hydrogen bonding arises for which the critical temperature of water is higher than O2.and not for v-shape.
@Asish : " " a molecule having V shape does not necessarily mean it has a dipole moment " "
But in this Qs H2O has dipole moment as well as V shape
So both may be the reasons no ??
a molecule having V shape does not necessarily mean it has a dipole moment (suppose all three atoms had almost same electronegativity)
So, (d) is correct
one ans given is D and
other one is C and D..
i think second one is right !!
