Why are pentahalides of Gr 15 elements more covalent than trihalides?

A compound is formed by the sharing of or transfer of electrons.
To form pentahalide non covalently 5 electrons would have to be transferred.It is easier to share 5 electrons than transferring them.In trihalides only 3 electrons are involved so it has higher ionic character.
