93-mark evaluation errors in JEE 2010

Under Question
Section II, Paper I & Section IV, Paper II
Why: No provision for negative marking and more than one answer in the given choices was stated to be correct
Many questions out of syllabus
Maths questions of Olympiad, not Class XII, level
New Delhi, April 12
Marking and evaluation errors of 93 marks have surfaced in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2010 held yesterday for admission to 15 IITs, Institute of Technology, BHU and Indian Institute of Mines, Dhanbad.
Many questions have been found to be out of syllabus apart from concerns that over 75 per cent questions in mathematics were of the Olympiad level — so complicated that only a “coached†student could have cracked them in the allotted time. In that sense, the question paper ran contrary to the recent thinking in HRD Ministry that IITs should discourage coaching institutes.
Analysis of the question paper, which IITs started disclosing since 2007 under pressure from the Chief Information Commissioner, reveals problems in paper setting and evaluation in two specific sections — Section II of Paper I and Section IV of Paper II, where there’s no provision for negative marking and more than one answer in the given choices is stated to be correct. Section II of Paper I has five questions, three marks each, for each maths, physics and chemistry and is qualified by these instructions — “there can be more than one correct answers; there’ll be partial marking for partially correct answers and no negative marking for an incorrect answerâ€. The instruction doesn’t say the ORS sheet of a student who marks all the choices would be treated as null and void.
Naturally, with no negative marks, a candidate who darkens all the bubbles (instead of correct ones) can earn full marks without applying any knowledge. “Without negative marking, there’ll be no deduction for darkening the wrong bubbles. If all bubbles are marked, the correct answers would have been anyway covered, giving a clever student full marks without any application of mind. So, he can earn 15 marks each in maths, physics and chemistry, fetching 45 marks in the section,†admits Professor Rajeev Kumar of IIT-Kharagpur.
Similarly, Section IV of Paper II (with two questions of eight marks each) says that any given statement in Column I can have correct matching with one or more statements of Column II. Here also, there’s no negative marking and there’s a possibility of more than one correct matching. So, a smart student can match all five statements and get 16 marks (two in math, four in physics and two in chemistry) each, fetching 48 marks in all.
That brings a student’s total to 93 (45 in Section II, Paper I and 48 in Section IV, Paper II) — more than the JEE subject cutoffs announced in recent past. Such a high aggregate score would also be enough to place the student in Extended Merit List (EML), which had a cutoff of 56 last year, and even place him in the Common Merit List. Another concern is the toughness of maths questions in JEE 2010. Anand Kumar of Super 30 fame, who trains poor students to crack the JEE, told TNS today, “Over 75 per cent maths questions were of Olympiad and not Class XII level. Only tutored students could have answered these.â€
Many questions were out of syllabus: like two three-mark questions on superconductivity in Section III of Paper I in physics and one three-mark question in Section III of Paper I on cubic equation in geometry.
I didnt have much brains to mark all the bubbles.....so i surely lost that 93 marks (guarantee vale)....plus math went horrible....never in next 5 yrs i can hope to crack all those math ques on my own.....so JEE dream almost over.unless some miracle is waitng to ahppen ...looking forward to aieee and bits.....par dar lagta hai...kyunki agar jee ka ye haal tha..toh sarkari cbse valon ka kya haal hoga ?? :P :P :(
and ya many will disagree with me ..i know...but i what i surely know is there will be more agreements than disagrements..
i agree wid u & da newsppr article u posted is wow.... it actually describes JEE 2010........... 4 me maths was relli a disaster :(
also one small thing ...
i disagree with metal
"I don't think there is any partial marking.... if you haven't got the whole answer correct, you just haven't got it."
as the iit didnt have time to elaborate the marking scheme [3]...so they will have to give us partial marks...and all those who marked all the options.....
becoz with RTI now in our hands and a court case already framed against IIT(link here http://www.tribuneindia.com/2010/20100409/nation.htm#1)...iit cant escape easily...
i think i lost abt 20-30 marks due to the physics-maths mismatch as i was not able to bubble all the right answers after erasing the wrong ones [2][2][2].......and now the multiple choice answers are just adding fuel to the fire that is burning inside my head from last couple of days....just imagine if some undeserving student has marked all the options in multiple choice then he is going to land in iit.......just the thoughy of it irks me........its worse than reservations and quotas.
last year i heard lot of students complaining about the paper just because it was set by iit guwahati(the new kid) ......now they are going to consider themselves lucky as jee-2009 was far better managed exam than the this mess that we gave this year
now sincerly speaking i demand re-examination........simply because i didnt got my 1000 bucks worth(forget about the repute and standard with which iit conducts its examinations)
[16][16][16]
sad stuff.......eure i dont think theyll do that ... what they mean by partial marking is that if u tick 1 of the correct answers ull get somne marks ..... but if u tick even 1 rong answer u get a 0 ......,,
but if they had put a '*' and put conditions apply they wuda been safe!!!!!!!! :P....
Yeah...in TOI, paper-setter from madras had said- "If all four options are shaded for a question for which there less than four correct option, then yhe candidate gets zero. To avail partial marks number of choices shaded should not exceed total number of correct choices and must include atleast one correct choice". Hopefully they'll do something sensible, nahi toh mere bhi 93 marks gaye...[2]
Section IV of Paper II (with two questions of eight marks each) says that any given statement in Column I can have correct matching with one or more statements of Column II. Here also, there’s no negative marking and there’s a possibility of more than one correct matching. So, a smart student can match all five statements and get 16 marks (two in math, four in physics and two in chemistry) each, fetching 48 marks in all.
@eureka : I did nt get the abv part of ur passage
How is 16 marks possible u'll get those only if put right option
and that partial marking i too agree with iitimcoming
arre...they will surely bring up some sensible ideas for section 2 of paper 1...
@uttara..those arent my comments....those were printed in today's edition of "The Tribune"
@guruji,iitimcomin..
since they didnt explain that in detail, they cant do that. They should have elaborated the procedure ....its a case of cheating if they do that
@saket...
ya lets support a re exam..i too am disappointed at not getting my 1000rs worth..is a consumer court case applicable here ??
btw u know anyone in TV news ??atleast its better than sania-ayesha-shoaib story [3][9]
one more thing that pinches me how are they gonna divide the partial marks ???
if a ques has 2,3,4 otpions share will be 1.5,1,0.75 ???or have they fixed something ??
or have they violtaed secrecy of paper by disclosing only 3 options correct and distributing 1 marks to each option and thus cheating students ???
if thats the case..student who marked 3 options will definitely get atleast 2 marks for each question
(use some math)...taking total to 30 marks.....which isnt small amount....[16][16]
surely the anger is growing within me and many others..and i want to bang my head with wall........but is there any alternative ????
@eureka : First of all lets relax . no use burning ourselves of anger....
and yes I liked our idea of re- exam though I dont think we can do much...
maybe a nice community in orkut or facebook we can hope for atleast 2 out of the 4.72 lakhs as members :D
@philip..
there is need to burn with anger after what happened on sunday...3yrs of hard work were ridiculed by the paper setters who perhaps printed it a couple of days before the exam....
i wont be surprsied if i find all the math ques copied from a single page of a olympiad book [16]
and why cant we have re exam ????we had in 1997 after huge furore ....so why not now ???at our centre not even a single student i intercated with was contented with the paper....unlike last time...
and ya ....i am not angry with pattern change or stuffing 80 odd ques .....
what i am angry is lack of clarity in an exam which has reputation of being worlds tuffest exam ...
yes philip
i talked to a lawyer in my locality
he said iit has screwed and there is a very strong case
1) printing error in ORS
simply disturbed mentally throughout the exam
they cant play with futu of 4.5 lakh ppl
2) lack of clarity in language of instructions
this afected the statergy to attemp question
just thinking of issuing a public interest litigation
or is it all lame thing
just another excuse of not performing well ??
@gordo,,,
thx for info...this is a serious issue boss....they played with lives of 4 lac students...it isnt a small thing...nthing short of mass fraud
and this isnt excuse for not performing .....u cant fight with one hand tied.
there has to be some equality....
is a re exam really possible guys/...............but who will convey all this to the IIT s specially IIT , .M.........2009 was a great paper ./..in comp of 2010~
look guys wat i saw at goiit !!!!! .,,,,,,,,,someone in may wrote that he knows.........that ,,,,,(IN MAY 09),jee 2010 is going to be set by IIT MADRAS..........thats k ...bt the astonishing part is he has written that ...........maths wud be very tough and that has happened!
i dont think paper was leaked...every yr many give their own predctions like babas on TV.....all arent true..i would say its coincidence.....
but flaws in apper isnt coincidence.....it has happened for first tiem in history...and future of students should be taken care into
ok, i guess i missed quite a bit of the action.
@eure, chill man. i don't think u have an option other than chilling. @philip, it isn't easy to chill if u'v spent 3 yrs and see a paper that disappoints u..trust me, it feels bloody terrible. If u are not feeling that good, we cud talk, eure.
@ppl, this thing happens almost every yr. i know its happening at a totally different level this yr. now a days, ppl going to the exam hall and finding JEE unreasonable has become a trend.
i suggest u ppl forget this, start AIEEE, BITS prep.s freshly.
cheers!!
Main toh chill maar raha hoon...dermi cool lagao...thanda-thanda cool-cool[3]
PJ's apart...yaar gordo, chill nahi maara jata. 3 years!!
eure...how much r u scoring bro????
i dun find reason complaining..it wasnt my day dat day..i knw ppl scorng 370,350 n they found it easy!!
2 students from our coaching are getting 400+
I am not surprised coz they were very accurate and fast
they completed coaching tests in 2 hrs and without silly mistakes
it was exactly there type of paper
GUYS ONE MORE THING!! FOR THE THERMOD question......how r we suppsed to knw that the guys r gona give us whether the line passes through the origin or not.....for the refractive index match the column..dint we simply do it by our eye estimation????
