Some conceptual doubts in optics

1)Is the formula 'real depth/apparent depth =μ " valid if viewed from a position quite away from the normal?

2) Can there be a situation in which a light ray passes through a prism undeviated?
I think it happens in grazing incidence

3)If a piece of paper is placed at the position of a virtual image of a strong light source, the paper burns after sufficient time. What happens if the image is real?

4)A single lens is mounted in a tube. A parallel beam enters the tube and emerges out of the tube as a divergent beam. Can you say certainty that there is a diverging lens in a tube?

1) dont remember formulae blindly.. try deriving them look at what assumptions have been taken to derive a formula .. (for ths particular case, derivation is der in HCV) (here it wont be valid)

3) it is the opposite. when the image is real, the paper burns.. when it is virtual it will never burn if the paper is placed there as no light ray reaches that position.

4) not necessarily as the convergence/divergence of a parallel beam depends on
(i) material of lens
(ii) material of surrounding medium

NO.? :P

@ Vivek,

grazing incidence mein hota hai, when the ray of light falls perpendicular to the

surface of the prism

yes there can be a situation when ray of light passes through a prism undeviated , other than which khyati told....

@ Nihal tell those other situations too Please [1]

@ khyati, grazing incidence is a case of maximum deviation!! light ray can pass undeviated if the refractive index of prism is same as that of the medium in which incident beam is present

for ques 4 plz. specify the size of the tube bcoz. we can also consider the open end as a point source ( Huygen's principle)

I have written the question as it is, no where is tube size is mention
