by using the functioning of per-iodic acid (HIO4), it can be deduced easily.. Compounds containing 2 or more than 2 OH or CO bonds are oxidized by HIO4.. You can read it's function of oxidation and clevage here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_acid . Other structures are possible too but d is satisfying all conditions.
