H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent not as an oxidising agent .
protonation of the 2o takes place . this leads to the formation of the stable 2o carbocation.
then H+ is eliminated form one of the methyl gps. giving the product.
What i thought was that in the presence of H+ pinacol/Pinacolone rearrangement will be there.............
shouldn't the product be 2-methyl propanaldehyde. ? I got a doubt. the stable 2o carbocation is formed , then hydride shift . this is more easier remember ? thus getting teh above product.
