i am not sure if this gives good yield of the product

KMnO4 , then decarboxylation

you can convert it into nitromethane CH₃NH₂ then add NaNo₂ and HCl and get an alcohol then jst reduce it

ethane-->chloroethane-->ethanol-->ethene-->methanal-->methane

i think the yield is good here
