We can find its mol wt by any colligative property :P
and can distinguish... :D
today only studied liq soln :p
Sky, ur answer seems to b correct. But I'm a jumbo dumbo at organic chemistry. So pls forgive me [3]
well , haloform is fine . preferbaly iodoform :) .
adn other method is first oxidise using PCC and use a base , as they are only to be distinguished this is possible and not separated.
and by knowing the percentage of enol present we can identify them
hey everyone have given the answer but i think no one got confused as u all take 1-propanol but none has taken 2-propanol if it is 2-propanol & ethanol then haloform test fails then oxidation with dil.KMnO4 is via to distinguish them & if1-propanol then same above test but hey think any more way to distinguish via long conversion think plzzzz
aldol and enol content . should suffice for this also .
else oxidise using PCC . and then tollen's test . this should be sufficient.
Extract from Schaums book
""Add I2 in OH- until I2 colour persists.A pale yellow ppt. of CHI3 appears indicating that ethyl alcohol is oxidised.
Propyl alcohol does not have -CH(OH)CH3 group and is not oxidised ""
and b/w at rahul . doesn't propyl alcohol mean propanol ? if it was 2-propanol . then common name would be isopropyl alcohol not propyl alcohol.
SKYGAL U R RITE COZ ONLY FOR HALOFORM DA REQ. IS -COCH3 GRP WHICH IS DER ONLY IN ETHANOL NOT PROPANOL!!!!
Y SO MUCH FUSS ABT IT????
SANKARA : ne1 = anyone
lol!!!!
one small doubt.. don scold.... cann v say n-ethyl...???????????
in haloform
if atleast one methyl present then rex can proceed
