no..thats not the ans given in the book..thats what i also thought.

If 1 Eq of aluminium iso-propoxide is used, only one carbonyl carbon will be transformed into -OH, reaction occurs through a single concerted transition state. Don't see any other possibilities occurring, had there been intermediates, it would've been possible..

you are talking about merveen pandaroff verley ?. It should be same as mentioned above. After re-reading mechanism, I don't feel there will be any case in this question. Or It is possible that the product can dehydrate in presence of any acid (which is not given in questions and can't even be abstracted in questoin) to give anthracene. What's answer?

yes ankur,ans given is anthracene..but without any heat or anything,why will it dehydrate ??

Yaa I got it. MPV proceeds with Al(OCHMe2)3 . Here Al is electron deficient material (and good dehydrating agent), after whole reaction of anthraquinone, we will get OH in place of ketone group and this will dehydrate to form anthracene.
Hope it clears. But I'm left with one doubt myself: Why Al(OCHMe2)3 does not behave as dehydrating agent with all hydroxy groups?
