Discuss the planarity of Cyclooctatetraene

This is very tricky..

sp² hybridised carbons..

have an angle of 120 degree.

but cyclooctatetraene has 8 atoms..

by geometry, we know that the single angle is not 120 degrees..

so the structure will have to bend to give way to something that is non planar

otherwise there will be a contradication..

it's tub shaped.
