@kartick....
alcohol has higher priority that amino acids...

actually me 2 having a few doubts ..normally alkenes are given preference over alkynes while selecting functional grp ...i came across few compounds ....where alkyne was given preference ..just bcz the triple bond was a terminal one ....
I think nomenclature is far more vast than our syllabus ...so IIT wont ask complicated stuff....
in that iodine will be given priority ...u will hav to go in alphabetical order ....in ...Methyl and Iodine .. I is b4 M hence Iodine is named b4 methyl
Q.6 : halogen grps arent treated as functional groups ....
for eg: 1-chlorobutane, 2-bromopentene.....etc...actually there is a priority order of functional grps ....
1] Carbocations
2] Carboxylic acid
3] Acid anhydride
4] Esters
5] Acyl halides
6] Amides
7] Nitriles
8] aldehydes
9] Ketones
10] Alcohols
11] Thiols
12] Amines
13] Ether
14] Sulphides
15] Alkenes
16] Alkynes
17]Alkanes
18] Alkyl halides
19] Nitro grp
PS: someone confirm if it is correct
first one bcos iodine shud be given high priority and its in the longest chain.
amide has higher priority acc. to NCERT 11th pg. 336 !!!!!!!!!!!
When my tuition sir taught he discussed both the compounds..i just checked up the copy..even he said --
1. 3-carboxypentane-1,5-dioic acid
2. 3-cyanopentane-1,5-dinitrile
kartick is talking about citric acid--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citric_acid
satisfied with manish sir , IF IT IS THE COMP. THEN
THEN IT'S NAME WILL BE:
2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tri carboxylicacid
in my school book Succinic Acid is 1,4-butanedioic acid...c this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Succinic_acid
has IUPAC revised its nomenclature regarding this ??
ur name is in "Other names" there
for ronald...Q1
if the compound contains more than 2 acid functional groups, the longest alkyl chain containing max no. of carboxy functional groups becomes parent chain and C00H groups are treated as locant.Preference in numbering given to COOH group [1]
here the priority is same for these functional groups and each group contains carbon, thats why it is con considered as secondary group
sir, but isnt the first rule to select the longest C-atom chain?
in that case shudnt the name be 3-carboxy pentan-dioic acid?
