Syn means same side addiiton....
I wanted to know what is meant by syn addition?.In a book i have read this that when alkenes are hydrogenated in the presence of Pd,Pt or Ni catalysts then we get alkane and that the hydrogen is added to the double bond following syn addition. So WHAT IS THIS SYN ADDITION???

see the reaction u r takin abt is surface catalysed......so the addition can be only from one side...so it is sny additon.......
in case of formation if epoxide ring..the same side is blocked...so attack takes place from opposite side hence the addition is anti or trans...
just c the mechanism of hydrogenation rxn properly..
it is taking place through chemizorption on the surface of the metal..Ni/Pt/Pd act as catalyst in the rxn..
attack is taking place only from one side..
thus its called syn addition.
dude just google it ..and try to get a 3D motion video of it in youtube if possible .. it wil help ..cheers!!
