i think it is the substituted compounds which was first known because of their applications when compared to benzene.
"Michael Faraday first isolated and identified benzene in 1825 from the oily residue derived from the production of illuminating gas, giving it the name bicarburet of hydrogen." - which makes it pretty obvious what came first, the chicken(benzene) or the egg(its substituted compounds).
