IIT JEE 2009 P2 Q5

For the reduction of NO3- ion in an aquous solution, E0 is +0.96V. Value of E0 for some metal ions are given below

A) V2+ + 2e- -> V E0=-1.19V
B) Fe3+ + 3e- -> Fe E0=-0.04V
C) Au3+ + 2e- -> Au E0=+1.40V
D) Hg2+ + 2e- -> Hg E0=+.86V

The pair of metals that is oxidized by NO3- in aquous solution is (are)

a,c,d......2000% sure

anyone to challenge....
first balace net reaction then find delta g then come to challlenge

all the bast@rd coaching institutes gave answer as a,b,d......

so u want to say that Hg is not oxidised by HNO3

and gold is !!

so chem u better take a look at these

1. with dil nitric acid

6Hg + 8HNO3 -----> 3Hg2(NO3)2 +2NO + 4H2O

clearly Hg is oxidised and NO3- reduced

2. noble metals like gold , platinum , iridium , rhodium etc are not acted upon by nitric acid . however metals dissolve in aqua regia

dude it is asked for the pair....means when u put the pair of metal in the solution....both should be oxidised.....so write reaction for all three reactions and add delta g...thenu wiil conclude that a,c,d should be the answer.......

even if u see separately then also for Hg u have E=(3/2)*0.86
AND FOR NO3- E=(3/3)*0.96

SO CLEARRLY HG WILL BE REDUCED

WE MUST BALANCE THE ELECTRONS NAA......
