A sample contains both H3PO4 and HIO3 along with other unknown substances.10 g of sample required 85 ml of 0.15 N NaOH during titration with phenolphthalein as indicator.A separate 10 g sample required 66ml of 0.15 N NaOH during titration using methyl orange as indicator.Calculate the percentage composition of the sample.
H3PO4+OH-→[H2PO4]-(Methyl orange end point)
H3PO4+2OH-→[HPO4]-(Phenolphthalein end point)

Let the milliequivalents of HIO3 as x and H3PO4 as y
so we have
x+y=66*.15
x+2y=85*.15
- Jeet Sen Sharma sir how do we do such type of sums...??Upvote·0· Reply ·2013-08-09 10:55:57
- Anik Chatterjee but then sir,i get the answer only if i assume that the valency factor of both HIO3 and H3PO4 is 1..but,why is it 1?
