Interanal Energy will increase by the amout of heat supplied .
Q = L*m
Q is the heat supplied
L is the latent Heat of fusion
m is the mass of the slab
during the melting of a slab of ice at 273 K at atmospheric pressure:
what will be its effect on the internal energy of ice - water system
Interanal Energy will increase by the amout of heat supplied .
Q = L*m
Q is the heat supplied
L is the latent Heat of fusion
m is the mass of the slab
but internal energy is equal to (f/2)RT
where f is degree of freedom
and temperature is constant so internal energy should not change
during melting of a slab of ice at 273K atmosphere pressure internal energy of the ice water system increases and positive work is done by the atmosphere on the ice water system [22]
hey during melting, the change in temperature is almost zero !!
so will the internal energy be affected ?
It is sure to increase......
When ice melts volume decreases
=> dV<0
=> PdV<0 => dW<0
Hence when ice melts.....
dU = dQ-dW = +ve-(-ve) = net +ve......hence U increases
oooooooooooooo...........
there was a looooooooooong discussion on this looooong ago... in the forum..
the q was put by apoorva...
during melting of a slab of ice at 273K atmosphere pressure internal energy of the ice water system increases and positive work is done by the atmosphere on the ice water system
as it converts to water motion is possible in many ways in ice motion is restrained
