√4 = 2 and 41/2 = +-2....i think prophet sir will be able to explain this better
I always was and am confused with POSITIVE and NEGATIVE signs for the square roots!So,please answer these seemily STUPID questions [1] so that i remain no longer confused!

see this is a matter of convention and definition.
I would strongly suggest u to folow what debosmit has said...
and keep in mind if u have a question where it acts like a function then u will take only the +ve value in both cases...
but sir, what is d √4 not equal to -2 where as 41/2
equal to -2??? could u please explain in depth???????
see avisikta.. to avoid confusion
there are two questions one is
x= √4
another is x2=4
What is bein said is that in the first case x=2
2nd one is clearly x= both 2 and -2
adding to what I am saying, the way we have defined functions is that it is never one to many relation. So if we want square root to be a function then we cannot allow it to be both +2 and -2 (it will kill the basic definition of a function)
Recall that we allow this in the inverse trigonometric functions.
I agree with "h4hemang" √4 =2 but
x2 = 4
the x = +2 and -2.
Actually the 2 values of x satisfies the equation.
