a general doubt in electrostats!!

we say that conductors r called so coz they have lot of free electrons , which r generated coz in conductors electrons r loosely held and in insulators they r tightly held so no free electrons........

my quesn is that why is that in CONDUCTORS electrons r loosely held and in insulators tightly held!!!????

actually the question is rhetoric!!

the answer is it is because "those with high number of loosely held electrons which can take part in easy charge flow are CALLED conductors and those devoid of any free charges are CALLED insulators or dielectrics!!!"

:D:D

but why is it so??
was it done arbitrarily!!!!??

the question is like why is momentum mv and ke 12mv2 and KE is not mv2....why this advantage is given to momentum and not KE??

(This was one of nishant bhaiya's questions!!)

just look which substances are conductors and which are insulators.conductors are mainly 1-2 group elements or precisely speaking "metals" in the periodic table.now we know that more metallic elements like 1-2 group elemnts easily donate electrons .similarly insulators are substances which don't donate electrons easily.

i think valence band theory can also help u at this in conductors the valence band nd conduction band r collapsing tht means more no. of electrons r present for conducting electricity ........nd in insulators there is a high energy gap between valence band nd conduction band so, the electrons r not available for conducting electricity even on applying energy to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nd yah i agree with shubho tht u have asked the ques reversely!!!!!!!!!!
