Proposal to scrap IIT JEE

The IITs and all other engineering schools may soon pick students based more on board examination marks than on entrance test performances, under testing reforms recommended by a panel of IIT directors.

The panel, appointed by human resource development minister Kapil Sibal, has recommended replacing the four-decade-old IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and myriad other engineering entrance examinations with a common test modelled on the US-based scholastic aptitude test (SAT).

The panel has suggested that the IITs accord a 70 per cent weightage to board examination scores in picking students, in its report to Sibal accessed by The Telegraph through top panel sources.

Scores in the common aptitude test that will replace the IIT-JEE will contribute the remaining 30 per cent weightage in determining which candidates are selected, the panel has recommended.

Unlike the current engineering entrance examinations including the IIT-JEE, the common aptitude test will not have questions on physics, chemistry and math, but will test students’ powers of logical reasoning and communication skills.

If the recommendations are accepted, the IITs will for the first time admit students based more on their board examination marks than on their performance in a special entrance test.

The proposed reforms will also be the most wide-reaching changes to India’s undergraduate engineering admission procedure in decades.Over two million students appear for different undergraduate engineering entrance examinations every year. Over 4.5 lakh appeared for Sunday’s IIT-JEE alone.

Officials in the HRD ministry refused to comment on the report’s contents. But top sources confirmed that Sibal, currently touring New Zealand, has asked his officials to study the report in detail so the ministry can discuss it after he returns on Thursday.

The minister had announced in February that he was setting up a panel under IIT Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya to study proposed reforms to the IIT-JEE. The panel was appointed in March, with the directors of the IITs in Mumbai, Roorkee and Chennai as the other members.

Although the panel was originally intended to propose reforms only for the IIT-JEE, its recommendations, if accepted, will also mean the end of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination and all state-specific common entrance tests. The new common aptitude test will help admit students to all undergraduate engineering institutions in India, whether run by the Centre, state governments or private managements. The recommendations indicate that institutions other than the IITs will also be required to give 70 per cent weightage to board examination marks, but do not specifically say so.

The panel has recommended that the government develop a Comprehensive Weighted Performance Index (CWPI) to calculate a student’s overall score based cumulatively on his performance in the board examinations and in the common aptitude test. The report appears principally based on discussions at a meeting held with other government representatives, including Central Board of Secondary Education chairman Vineet Joshi and select state representatives in Chennai on March 16.

The HRD ministry is already working towards a plan to introduce a common high school curriculum in the sciences and math, cutting across the 35 boards — central and state — that govern Indian school education.

The common curriculum would make easier a comparison between the board examination scores of students from schools affiliated to different central and state government boards, Joshi had told the meeting.

The CWPI proposed by the panel is aimed at normalising any differences that remain between difficulty levels of school-leaving examinations under different boards.

if JEE is abolished,,,,,take my words...the IIT would no longer remain a premier institute of the world...its level would degrade and the craze for IIT will definitely come down by leaps and bounds...that would mean a serious setback to indian technology department !!!! sounds terrifying....

The main problem in India is overpopulation and corruption.

If IITJEE is abolished, then it would really be an unfortunate decision. giving 70% of the weightage to the boards marks is totally unacceptable. One can clearly see the difference, between the students who understand what they are studying and the other lot who cram up stuff to score good marks in their boards. For one thing, it might take the 'coaching factor' out of the equation, but still it will cause a lot of harm to the already questionable level of the IITs. Doing away with the differential between boards seems to be a good thing on the other hand.

"The best way to increase the intake of girls is to have direct admissions,"
IT IS A GREAT BLUNDER MISTAKE
IN 2-3 YEARS IITs WOULD FAIL IF THEY CONTINUED GIVING SUCH STATEMENTS...

@uttara...unconditional apology from my side if that hurt u in any way...it was in no way meant to be a discrimnatory statemnt :)

but those arent my words...A prof of iitm expresed his concern ..and hinted at boards to get girls in iit
"""Professor V G Idichandy, dean (students), IIT Madras, was more vocal, demanding that JEE be abolished. "One of the reasons for the poor intake of girls in the flagship BTech programme is that parents don't send daughters for coaching classes. The best way to increase the intake of girls is to have direct admissions," he said."""

@eureka : " " and i know why they are so intrested in boards..they want more girls to get into iit...dont know why ??? " "

WHAT MADE U MAKE THIS STATEMENT ??

Is there any reservation coming up or is it just a casual (but very stupid) assumption

i think a aptitude test would be a great thing!! but if u really want a US like SAT!! then why this 70 % boards thing???? why cant they just giv 1 or two big comprehension with the entire theory n then ask some questions based on it....khud hi pata chal jayega..who deserves n who doesnt!!!

but i dont understand this gender thing at all ,

u cant just force the girls into it ,
they will study for JEE even without the classes if they are willing ,

and if sibal really wants girls to get into IIT , we must first ask him empty his own seat for some female candidate .

same here i don't wanna that the muggers get into the iit and the deserving ones which i feel i'm in the one[3][3] deserving shuld lack behind.
STRONG OPPOSITION of allowing admission on board mark basis.

arey sab muggers hi jayenge to Desh ki halat kya hogi.

Thnk abt that Mugging thing in 3 IDIOTS which i thnk is a best example one can ever have on mugging ( the one named " chatur ". )
Akhir is Kapil bhai sahab ki kya bimari hai.
INSOMNIA [3] kya ?

rahul nair ·

IIT says it wants candiddates with 'Raw Intelligence', so do they mean tht people who mug up and score well in boards have "Raw Intelligence"?

yup datz true ..... dey wan more gals 2 get into iit..... 4 da reason dat few parents dunt allow der daughters 2 go 2 classes far away .....(datz wut dey mentiond in some newspaper article i read)& datz little true as wel ...
but i STRONGLY OPPOSE da thing dat dey shud consider board marks(& hav formula based questns) jus 4 gals ...... dat wud jus make a way 4 muggers .......
dey r little wrong (as far as few gals r concernd) as da decision wud make a huge loss 4 boys who r talentd & dedicated 2wards da subjects & also 4 gals lyk me who can't mug up & remember things .....

so i relli oppose considering board xam marks 4 JEE
agree wid u eureka & also wid gordo (da xplanation he gav 2 why da jee maths was tough dis year)

eureka123 ·

that aptitude thing is very much welcome...but board stuff will surely take the flavour off form JEE...

and yes u r rite sir..with begining of science based colleges like iiser, iist, nisser best students will no longer prefer iit ....we already have a lot of stupid people there as gorde said in some thread....now,board guys will add to that mess ..

and i know why they are so intrested in boards..they want more girls to get into iit...dont know why ???

Well I'm in state board, so if they apply it from next yr, then I shud give away my thoughts of dropping 1 yr, bcoz I'm not getting so much marks in my boards for selection to JEE. my luck is going horrible this yr!

1
gaurav ·

any idea from which yr will this be applicable???

Lokesh Verma ·

The second part of this announcement seems very relevant.. I mean the differential across the boards should be removed....

The first part of this announcement is something that is more important.. Let us wait for the final draft.. It could be good, it could be bad..

One thing that it will surely do is remove a lot of good stuff that students study.. the aim will be to get good marks in exams and not to study science.. which is very unfortunate..

What good it could lead to is that a lot of such knowledge hungry students would start ot aim for colleges like ISI because they want to study for the love of the subject and not just for marks..
