Moumita Sen The appendix was previously believed to be a vestigial organ, being a remnant of caecum in plant-eating primates. However, the more recent theory is it has immune function, because it is rich in infection fighting WBCs. It is also believed to be a haven for useful bacteria when an infection wipes them out from the rest of the digstive tract.
