Less electronegative element becomes a hypohalite(XX'), halite(XX'3), etc. So it's true I think.
i feel the statement is false....
according to NCERT..wen compounds like XY(where Y is more electronegative then X) is hydrolysed then the products formed are
XY +H2O → HY + HOX..
thats not a redox reaction...so oxidation state of none of the species is change...
Oxidation state of X in XY = 1
Oxidation state of X in HOX = 1
Oxidation state of Y in XY = -1
Oxidation state of Y in HY = -1
Just rechecked.
XX' gives hypohalite + halide, XX'3 gives halite+halide, XX'5 gives halate+halide and XX'7 gives perhalate+halide ions. No change in oxidation state. govind is right.
