A compound is formed by the sharing of or transfer of electrons.
To form pentahalide non covalently 5 electrons would have to be transferred. It is easier to share 5 electrons than transferring them.In trihalides only 3 electrons are involved so it has higher ionic character.
Why are pentahalides of Gr 15 elements more covalent than trihalides?
