If velocity in second medium is less than first medium then phase change of pi takes place...
a plane wave y=A sin ω[t-x/v] undergo a normal incidence on a plane boundary separating medium M1 n m2 and splits into a reflected n transmitted wave having speed v1 and .comment on phase of transmitted n reflected wave ,ll they depend on v1 nv2

in general velocity does not change in reflecttion, only changes in transmission.
phase diff =o if from rarer to denser and Î if from denser to rarer.
ans given is fr all v1 nv2 phase of trnsmitted wave is same bt reflected wave depend on v1 n v2
YES U R RIGHT RICHA, AND SORRY I FORGOT TO MENTION IN POST #3, I WAS TALKING ABOUT REFLECTED WAVES.
if yi is incident wave and yt and yr are transmitted and reflected wave then...
at x=0(boundary of medium) yt=yi+yr
also (d(yi+yr)/dx)x=0=(d(yt)/dt)x=0... slope of wave must be same at junction...
solving these...
Ar=Ai(v2-v1)/v2+v1
At=Ai(2v2)/v2+v1
clearly any v2 v1 can't make transmitted ray's amplitude negative so no phase change for transmitted...
But if v2<v1 then Ar becomes negative so pi phase change.
Ar is amplitude of reflected wave.. Ai of incident and At of transmitted..
