Negative work is done when you apply a force in one direction and the body moves in the other direction.
Work done = Force * Displacement cosθ
where θ is the angle between force and displacement.
Work done would be negative when θ is between 90 to 180 degrees.

negative work done is basically when work is done against the force applied...the above concept explained is absolutely correct, just dat i would like to add an example----a ball being lifted up.
here work is done against the gravitational force acting.
