wherever you go.....never go to : www.goiit.com.....it will RUIN you!!!!
hmm, yeah, i too agree with this view point.
"A well segregated forum structure - beginner, advanced and then , well, olympiad level" i just wonder whether this could be implemented on tiit.com
but yeah, about goiit.com, very sad, as once upon a tym, der used to be some really seasoned guyz who used to solve some real toughies, which we used to sit and admire, and also get inspired by to study harder. but now, err, okay, coming to the main point of the discussion,
i feel targetiit.com is a gr8 site for online problem practise.
goiit's decline is really a matter of anguish for me because when i first joined it there used to be so much action out there. The questions posed used to be of such good quality.
Now so much drivel gets posted there. I am pointing this out not so much to put down another site but more to avoid such a collapse.
Such sites can survive only by participation by some good students. Of course they get attracted only if they see something of value here. As I see it, an online site like this can position itself as a good supplement to the guidance received at a coaching centre. Another value adding feature is that students from various places share their knowledge here. So one gets to know so many new things. This will be one big draw if we can manage great participation.
So what the quality students will be looking for will be:
1. A broad base of top notch articles on specific subjects - concepts and their illustration by problem discussion, this format is very useful. This should be seriosuly undertaken as a project maybe by assigning topics to some domain experts. I have often seen such sites that boast of having articles, but are really so unhelpful because they dont really give any serious insight into the subject, but are at best brief summaries of theorems and stuff like that. That totally puts off the serious students
And of course some counselling topics - how to prepare, what topics to pay attention to, winning strategies, how to cope with the stress, how to choose a good institute/course and so on
2. A well segregated forum structure - beginner, advanced and then , well, olympiad level (mathlinks follows this). This makes it pretty clear to a student where he/she can start and work their way up to. This will need a moderator function to move problems to the correct sub-forums as necessary
3. Some word of mouth advertising will definitely be required. Students from coaching centres should be aware there exists a forum which can be just as useful as their coaching centre.
