we get all the intermediate shades...
Like in a ripple (in water)
Just like that.. but we say the turf and the crest! (just like dark and light fringe!)

I think the explaination is somewhat like this:
we view these patterns through naked eye......And so we observe only dark and light bands....Intermediate brightness bands maybe observed through some microscope or something like that ..........
I may be wrong dear...................

Any explanation of the double slit experiment that i see in any book says that "alternate bright and dark fringes are obtained"

nishant sir has already xplained it.....................pattern is similar to a wave ......so there will be alternate bright and dark fringes.......

It has nothing to do with "single" radiation
see this image... there are shades.. but still we can see dark and bright fringes...
