Anti-Markonikov

Whenever we do an anti- Markonikov addition (using peroxide), we always use HBr and not HCl or HI......

Why is that??? (I don't know...u tell me)

NOTE:

Another thing to "ponder" :P

How do we spell the name of the scientist???

Some suggestions: MARKOVNIKOV

MARKONIKOFF

MARKONIKO

Think abt it!!! :P

we always use HBr and not HCl or HI......

becoz one of the steps in formation of radicals in presence of proxides is endothermic in case of HCl..

and even if I. forms it immediately combines with another I. to form I2 .. so no effect.

another reason for y not HCl ... due to high difference in elecronegativities .. homolytic bond cleavage is not favoured.

HCl and HF do not form free radical due to greater bond-energy and formation of radicals in presence of peroxides becomes endothermic.

HI has minimum bond energy. It is very reactive.as soon as I. forms it immediately combines with another I. and form I2

btw....

i prefer MARKONIKOV.....it is the shortest spelling
