ACTUALLY IT IS JUST OPPOSITE OF WAT U R SAYING
OH GROUP ACTIVATES AND MAKES IT MORE REACTIVE![1]
YES SRY OH GP IS STABILISED BY RESONANCE AND THE NEGATIVE CHARGE ON THE MOLECULE WILL SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE MOLECULE,SO PHENOL CAN BE NITRATED WITH THE NITRATING MIXTURE.
Phenol gives picric acid with nitrating mixture........
hence the given statement is false
rahul............i am speechless.....................but ur xplanation is 100% wrong[1]
rahul's statement is correct
It does give picric acid (when heated mildly).
It can be nitrated by using only HNO3 . As in phenol, the H is acidic. Further the phenoxide ion thus formed is more ERG than the -OH group.
OH is a highly activating group, hence nitration is possible only with dil. HNO3.
SEE...........
WITH DIL.HNO3 IS OK FOR ME............BUT Y WITH NITRATING MIX. NITRATION WON'T TAKE PLACE??????
