certain volume of hydride of nitrogen is decomposed into its constituent elements by certain spark The volume of the resulting gas mixture becomes double of the initial volume Now oxygen has been added to the resulting gas mixture and sparked again and then cooled to room temperature After passing through alkaline pyragallol solution the volume becomes half of the initial volume of nitrogen hydride If all the volumes are measured at the same pressure and temperature then find the formula of hydride

is it that tough!

volume of hydride of nitrogen is V

NxHy --> x/2 N2 + y/2 H2
volume becomes double so x+y=4

oxygen is added and sparked.
so it will give H2O

alkaline pyragallol will absorb all the residual oxygen and water.

so what remains is N2 which has half the intial volume.

so x/2=1/2 so x=1

thus, y=3

thus the hydride is NH3

Bhaiya........two things.

i) Not so surprising : Pinking urself !!! [3]

ii) Surprising : Replying in chem threads???/ [11]

H2O is also absorbed by pyragallol !!!!!
I was making a mistake here
Thanks
