the central carbon is achiral but the molecule is chiral.
hopefully this makes it clear.
Is the central carbon on this chiral or achiral
How many chiral centers are there on the whole structure?

now see the diag does it matter whether the relative positions of the methyls which you've indicated ? hopefully I'm not wrong .
no the moleucule cannot ahve a centre of symmetry .
it's chiral whatever you do try superimpoesing it's mirro image
the second molecule by priyam has center of symmetry
so it sud b optically INACTIVE so the molecule's central carbon sud b
achiral.
oh sorry guys realised my mistake .
the Q was whether the central carbon is chiral or not . answer is no . but molecule is chiral . sorry for creating confusion . sorry [2][2][2][2]
chiral molecules are always optically active .
and a chiral centre is not a necesstiy for a chiral molecule.
is it necessary that chiral or achiral molecule will b optically active?
first molecule is achiral...drawn by priyam...so it sud b optically active...??
there are two chiral centres in the whole structure..................( i think)
no . the molecule is chiral remember that the carbon is like the one shown in daig . always think 3-D .
if you go from any position there is always another identical way as shown by 1,2,3,4. Therefore central carbon is achiral. but the other carbons indicated by diag. are chiral
