27-01-09 Electrostats cavity in metal

There is a cavity of radius a in a metal sphere of radius R...
There is a charge q at the center of this cavity

There is another cavity of radius b in the same sphere .. There is a charge Q in the center of it.

yup that is the phrase often used subash.. but could you explain how?

if there is an electric field inside the conductors then the electrons inside the conductor are under the action of the electrostatic force and the electrons shud be accelerated but it was not observed in reality the conductor is at electrostatic equilibrium so electric field inside the conductor should be zero

if theres a field inside conductor charges will be shifted in a fraction of second to restore equilibrium

I still don't know why there is no electric field inside a hollow shell and why charges must reside only on the surface.

i dont know why i was rong please see my charge distribution on the spherend correct me if i was rong...
so force on q is qq/4∩εr2 and on Q is QQ/4∩εr2

i would say that since a conductor has free electrons their movement neutralizes the electric field

a charge -q must reside on the metal surface of the cavity so that the sum of this included charge -q and the orginal charge +q within the gaussian surface is zero

that is how the thing is shielded !

using gauss law

there will be a charge -q induced on the inner surface of the cavity

it acts like a hollow sphere carrying a charge

so field inside it will be zero

charge density is uniform in the conductor so no electric field could exist hence no force

i think zero on both the charges

the conductor provides electrostatic shielding to the charge inside it

all of u seem to know the gyan.. but what is the exact reason..

unique has given a very close to correct reason..

the question is not charge.

it is force..

and the net charge is not zero prajith.. it is the net charge inside a conductor that is zaero because there is no electric field in the conductor

come on guys how come electric field exists inside a cavity of a conductor ?

the net charge is a big 0 bhaiyya

im sure becaz my teacher taught me that.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i also think zero.. but not very sure why!

the force on charge q may be qq/4∩εr2

and the force on charge Q may be QQ/4∩εr2

there is no electric field inside a conductor hence ......net force is zero !

(F=qE)
