Q1) It is enough to note that the given equation will be satisfied by the four normals to an ellipse
\dfrac{x^2}{a^2}+\dfrac{y^2}{b^2}=1
drawn from the point (h,\,k). Probably you know that in that case, the sum of the eccentric angels of the feet of the normals (which would be the four values of \theta here) is an odd multiple of \pi.

for the 3rd part, use p=eiθ and q=e-iθ

For Q 2, observe that if k is a root, -k is also a root..

I thought of that, but one of the roots will be x =0 too.

hmm.. i missed that out.. :(

but then this expression will make no sense!

I guess the person who made this question overlooked this or may be changed cot-1(a/x) to tan-1(x/a)

I would be very careful in saying that there is a mistake in one of these classics. but here I would probably stick my neck out to say that this is a mistake.. (unless you have typed the question wrong!)
